Hong Kong food markets are great photography locations. Not a formal comparison but you can have a glimpse of 5 cameras photographing the same theme:

Fujifilm X-T1 | 56/f1.2,    Sigma DP2M,    Ricoh GR + VSCO Superia-100,    Olympus OM-10 | 50/f1.8 | lomo Slide 200,    Lomo La Sardina | ISO1600film,    iPhone 5S + VSCO Cam

If you haven’t tried, food market is a bit of challenge: low light, fast and chaotic moving people wiping in front of you. Subjects are easily blocked by a lot of people back facing you. And traditional Chinese culture isn’t the most accepting when it comes to being photographed by strangers.

It’s interesting to look at different characters of photos resulting from different cameras, films, and lens:

X-T1 obviously is the best performer for IQ, color and usability. And the high quality 56mm/f1.2 let me get close to actions of people. More details here.

DP2M proves to be the most stunning details if you click to view the large image (especially the final image with no camera shake). However with a marginally usable ISO 800 (due to noise level. and many might argue the usable ISO is only 400 or even 200), usability is quite limited. More here. Still, it’s a pleasure to use when you knew it’s gonna give you stunning details when you got home icon smile 5 Food Markets of Hong Kong with 6 cameras

The GR is the greatest for stealth and producing great IQ as well. Unlike other digital photos in this post that are only color-balanced, the images of GR here are processed with VSCO lightroom preset to simulate color of the film:  Fuji Superia-100. Love the colors!

OM-10 with cross-processed lomo silde film creates rather unique and tasteful analogue images. A joyful experiment. more here:

La Sardina is the least usable camera in this case due to its fixed f/8 + 1/100 shutter exposure. Yes a fixed exposure, meaning the only allowance in exposure variation is the dynamic range tolerance of negative films… All photos are strongly under-exposed even in ISO 1600 film. The 22mm eqv. focal length is also not my usual angle to use. Great to test though.

The image here is sharpened and added noise, which looks no problem at mobile screens. However, it is the most artificial-looking image among all. Still, the power of iphoneography can’t be undermined.
